The Young Scientist Spotlight series features our former students involved with our Treehouse UCSC Bioinformatics Immersion (TUBI) program, where students gain real-world work experience as researchers in a supportive environment, contributing to Treehouse bioinformatic projects! This week, we are catching up with former TUBI student Samantha Garcia as she discusses how TUBI has impacted her research interests.
Interview by Krizia Chambers
Can you briefly describe your experience with TUBI? And what did you gain from participating in the program?
My Tubi experience was a journey; as a non-stem major, I struggled a lot. But the amount of work you put in is what you get out of the program. I have programming skills, knowledge of pediatric cancer that I am able to share with my community, and valuable relationships that enhance my university community.
Is there a single event, memory, or experience you had with TUBI where you felt connected to the group?
St. Baldrick event was a highlight, seeing everyone in real life and not on Zoom. Connecting to other survivors and seeing what research can do as far as ensuring better treatments. My partner and I still wear our bracelets from the event very proudly.
What advice would you like to lend to the new cohort of TUBI students?
Be nice to yourself, and give yourself grace. It’s hard and, at times, can be overwhelming, but it’s all worth it in the end.
