The Young Scientist Spotlight series features our former students involved with our Treehouse UCSC Bioinformatics Immersion (TUBI) program, where students gain real-world work experience as researchers in a supportive environment, contributing to Treehouse bioinformatic projects! This week, we are catching up with former TUBI student Miah-Annelisa Zamora as she discusses how TUBI has impacted her research interests.

Interview by Krizia Chambers

How did you get introduced to TUBI?

I was introduced to TUBI by a friend who had previously participated in TUBI. I learned how the program offers encouragement and support throughout the program.

What was your favorite memory in your TUBI cohort?

My favorite memories in TUBI would have to be the presentations we gave for our command and variant. These opportunities allowed me to improve my speaking, communication, and presentation skills.

What advice would you like to lend to the new cohort of TUBI students?

Advice that I would give to the new cohort of TUBI participants would be to keep an open mind and trust yourself. When I applied to TUBI, I was nervous because I had no previous experience, but with the support of my TUBI cohort, I made new friendships. Throughout the program, I grew confident in my ability to contribute because I learned that the process of learning is what makes new experiences.
